Dujiangyan Itineraries: Half-Day Loop, Full UNESCO Day & the Two-Day Unhurried Plan

Dujiangyan fits almost any schedule: the water works alone fill a focused half-day, the twin World Heritage pairing with Mount Qingcheng makes the classic full day, and one extra night unlocks the relaxed version with evening food streets and pandas on the way home. Here are three field-tested plans — with the timing, ticket and transport details already solved.

Erwang Temple courtyards above the weir works at Dujiangyan
Erwang Temple from above — the afternoon reward at the end of the classic loop.

Key takeaways

  • Half day (3–5 hours): the full water-works loop — Lidui Park, Baopingkou, Anlan Bridge, Yuzui, Erwang Temple — plus the ancient town.
  • Full day: Dujiangyan at 08:00, Mount Qingcheng’s front mountain after lunch — the classic UNESCO pairing in one day.
  • Two days: split the pace — water works and ancient town on day one, Qingcheng’s trails and a Chengdu panda stop on day two.
  • The constant: enter at 08:00 whenever possible; ticket sales stop at 17:30 (summer) / 17:00 (winter) and everyone leaves by 20:00 / 19:30.
  • One ticket decision: standard entry from $11.99, or the Dujiangyan + Mount Qingcheng combo on Trip.com.

Book once, plan freely: every itinerary below runs on the same Trip.com e-ticket — standard or combo. Grab it the night before and every plan starts at the turnstile, not at the ticket counter.

Half-day plan: the water works

  • 08:00 — Gate on Park Road. Scan the e-ticket, walk into Lidui Park while the mist is still on the river.
  • 08:15 — Baopingkou. The Bottle-Neck channel and the isolated Lidui cliff: the story’s opening chapter, five minutes from the gate.
  • 09:00 — Anlan Bridge. Cross mid-span, stop, and read the whole river: inner channel, outer channel, fish-shaped dike below.
  • 09:30 — Yuzui & Feishayan. Walk out to the Fish Mouth, then along the inner bank to the Flying Sand Weir — the system’s silent regulator.
  • 10:30 — Erwang Temple. Climb the courtyards, pay respects to Li Bing, take the rooftop view back over the works.
  • 12:00 — Guanxian Ancient Town. Exit through the old town; teahouse lunch, snack streets, and the canal promenade before the train home.

This is the plan one reviewer ran and loved: “a great half day trip… you would need a minimum of 3 hours to experience the river and ancient town.” Another visitor gave it four hours “Обязательно к посещению” — a must — and still had evening in Chengdu.

Full-day plan: the UNESCO pair

  • 08:00–12:00 — Dujiangyan. Run the half-day loop above, ending early for a quick lunch in the ancient town.
  • 12:30 — Transfer. Bus or taxi to Mount Qingcheng’s front mountain (20–30 minutes), or one stop on the intercity rail to Mount Qingcheng Station.
  • 13:00–17:00 — Front mountain. Jianfu Palace, the shaded stone paths, temple compounds and (if legs allow) the cableway to the upper pavilions for tea above the plain.
  • 17:30 — Down and back. Return train from Mount Qingcheng Station to Xipu, metro into Chengdu for dinner — or stay the night in Dujiangyan Town (see below).

The combo ticket covers both gates; check its validity window (same-day or next-day) on Trip.com before you pay, and note the two mountains have separate closing clocks — Qingcheng’s trails slow down in winter too.

Two-day plan: the unhurried version

  • Day 1 morning — Dujiangyan, slowly. The full loop at photographer’s pace, with the exhibition halls and every teahouse stop you skipped on the one-day plan.
  • Day 1 evening — Ancient town & Nanqiao. Lantern-lit lanes, riverside dinner, early night in a Dujiangyan City guesthouse.
  • Day 2 — Mount Qingcheng, then pandas. A full morning on the mountain, afternoon return via Chengdu’s Giant Panda Breeding Base — the perfect end to a water-and-wildlife Sichuan day.

With kids or older parents

The loop is genuinely family-friendly: riverside paths, restrooms and rest points all along the route, in-park transport for tired legs, and convenience stores for snacks. The Anlan Bridge is the star for children (and usually the only “scary” moment); the temple stairways are the only place strollers struggle. Slow the pace, start at 08:00 to get the bridge before the crowds, and let the ice-cream stand at the ancient town be the finish line. Note the park rules: no pets (leave the dog with a sitter) and no drones anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is a half day really enough?

For the water works, yes — 3–5 hours covers the loop properly, which is exactly Trip.com’s recommended sightseeing time. It feels short only because you will want to linger; the full-day pairing with Mount Qingcheng is the answer if it is.

Which plan works in winter?

All of them, compressed: the winter clock runs 08:00–17:30 with tickets until 17:00 and a 19:30 exit. Do the half-day loop, and move the Qingcheng pairing to a second day — winter light fades early on the mountain trails.

Can I do Dujiangyan and the pandas in one day?

It is possible but rushed. The pandas are on the Chengdu side; pairing them means entering Dujiangyan at 08:00, leaving by early afternoon, and reaching the base before its late-afternoon wind-down. The two-day plan handles both properly.

Where should I eat between the two sites?

In Guanxian Ancient Town — it sits between the scenic area and the transport to Qingcheng, and its snack streets (Sichuan noodles, wontons, teas) are the fastest good lunch on any plan. One traveler notes there is no halal restaurant inside the park itself; bring packed food if you have specific dietary needs.
