Visitor Guide

Everything you need for a perfect visit to Dujiangyan Scenic Area — timing, transport, the walking route, and insider tips from real travelers.

Timing

When Should You Visit?

The park runs two seasonal clocks — and the river writes its own show across the year.

Enter at 08:00The first hours are the calmest and coolest. Walk the works before the Chengdu tour groups arrive around 10:00 and you will have the Anlan Bridge nearly to yourself.
Know the two seasonsMar 2–Oct 31: 08:00–18:00, tickets until 17:30, everyone leaves by 20:00. Nov 1–Mar 1: 08:00–17:30, tickets until 17:00, leave by 19:30. Hours can vary on holidays.
Summer = full powerIn flood season the Feishayan spillway churns white and the whole system works at maximum drama — the best time to see the engineering doing exactly what Li Bing designed.
Spring festival & autumn colorsApril's Water Releasing Festival re-enacts the ancient opening of the channel with ceremonies and crowds; late autumn brings red-and-gold hillsides behind green water.

Getting there

An Easy Trip From Chengdu

Dujiangyan Scenic Area sits at Park Road, Dujiangyan City (都江堰景区) — about 60 km northwest of downtown Chengdu, at the mouth of the Min River valley. Any taxi or ride-hailing driver will recognize "都江堰景区".

  • Intercity train — the local favorite — C-trains from Chengdu's Xipu Station (connected to Metro Lines 2/6) stop at Lidui Park Station (离堆公园), a short walk from the entrance; the ride takes about half an hour.
  • By car or taxi — roughly 1–1.5 hours from downtown Chengdu by expressway, with parking lots at the gate (useful if you are continuing to Mount Qingcheng).
  • Organized day tours — countless buses run the Dujiangyan + Mount Qingcheng combo from Chengdu each morning; ideal if you prefer everything arranged.
  • Stay overnight in town — Dujiangyan City's hotels and guesthouses put you at the gate for an early start, with the ancient town's food streets for the evening.

Suggested plan

The Classic Walking Loop

A tried-and-tested order for first-time visitors — flip it freely, but keep the early-start magic.

1

Gate at 08:00

Enter from the Park Road side beside Guanxian Ancient Town, scan the e-ticket and follow the river path into Lidui Park while the light is still soft.

2

Lidui Park & Baopingkou

Meet the Bottle-Neck channel up close — the cliff Li Bing's workers cut through the mountain — and look down into the green water entering the plain.

3

Cross the Anlan Bridge

The planks sway just above the current. Mid-span, stop and read the whole river at once: inner channel, outer channel, and the fish-shaped dike below.

4

Yuzui — The Fish Mouth

Walk out to the dividing embankment, the heart of the system, and watch the Min River sort itself into irrigation and floodwater exactly as designed in 256 BC.

5

Erwang Temple

Climb into the Two Kings Temple courtyards on the slope — incense, drum towers, ancient cypresses and rooftop views back over the weir works.

6

Ancient Town Finish

Exit through Guanxian Ancient Town for a teahouse lunch and the snack streets — or continue by bus or taxi to Mount Qingcheng for the second half of the World Heritage pair.

Packing & family tips

What to Bring — and What Kids Will Love

Your passportReal-name ticketing applies: the name on the booking should match your ID or passport, and it can be checked at the gate.
Camera + zoom lensDrones are prohibited in the park, so the best angles come on foot — a zoom compresses the weir works, bridge and temple into beautiful layers.
Comfortable shoes, real onesThe loop runs 4–6 km on paths, bridges and stone steps. Kids love the swaying Anlan Bridge; strollers manage everywhere except the temple stairs.
Sun and rain readySichuan skies change fast — a light rain layer covers both the spring drizzle and the strong valley sun. Summer stays cooler by the river than in Chengdu.
Leave pets at homePets are not allowed anywhere in the scenic area — plan boarding for your furry friends before the day trip.
E-ticket screenshotSignal dips at the gate crowd — screenshot the QR code before you arrive, and keep the booking email handy.

Make a day of it

Pair the Water Works with Sichuan

All within reach of the gate — these classics complete a perfect Chengdu-and-beyond day.

Mount Qingcheng

The Taoist mountain of the same UNESCO inscription — forested trails, temple compounds and teahouses, 20–30 minutes from the scenic area gate.

Guanxian Ancient Town

The old county town at the doorstep: canalside walkways, snack streets and evening lanterns — the easiest "one more hour" of the trip.

Chengdu Classics

On the way back to the city: the Giant Panda Breeding Base, Wuhou Shrine, Jinli street and the tea-house lanes — a day of water wisdom pairs perfectly with pandas.

FAQ

Quick Answers Before You Go

How much time does a visit take?

The recommended sightseeing time is 3–5 hours. The core loop — Lidui Park, Baopingkou, the Anlan Bridge, Yuzui and Erwang Temple — takes 3–4 hours at an easy pace; add Guanxian Ancient Town or a Mount Qingcheng extension and it becomes a full day.

Can I visit without speaking Chinese?

Yes. Signage along the walking route is bilingual, the e-ticket flow on Trip.com is in English, and the ticket hotlines handle inquiries daily. A translation app helps for teahouse menus in the ancient town — or just point at what the locals are having.

Is Dujiangyan worth it if I have seen other Chinese sights?

Travelers consistently say yes — it is unlike any other monument in China precisely because it is not a ruin: a 2,280-year-old water system still doing its original job. As one reviewer put it, it is "a wonderful experience combining history, culture, and nature", and another called it simply "Обязательно к посещению" — a must-visit.

What about food and facilities inside?

The park has restrooms and rest points along the whole route, convenience stores and souvenir shops, in-park transport for tired legs and phone service. There is no halal restaurant inside the park, as one traveler notes — bring snacks if you have specific dietary needs, and eat well in the ancient town after.
